Be-Spoke Podcast Launch Event: The Vital Art of Commissioning

Be-Spoke is a new podcast that reveals the rich stories and relationships behind commissioned objects and experiences. The first series includes a live recording at London Craft Week 2022, presented by Adriana Paice Kent of Woven Spaces and hosted by SoShiro, 360° cultural hub in Marylebone.

For this special live panel recording Adriana Paice Kent welcomed Kate Maestri, an architectural glass artist and Maria Cheung, Head of Interiors at Squire and Partners alongside leading gallerist Shiro Muchiri. Together, they explored the challenges and opportunities of weaving bespoke elements into the built environment.

The edited recording broadcast in Spring 2022, as part of Be-Spoke’s larger programming schedule featuring guests across diverse crafts and industries: from architects and tailors to jewellers and perfumers.

"The unique object or experience has always had a powerful appeal, but the process of bespoke commissioning remains shrouded in mystery” says Adriana Paice Kent, Director of Woven Spaces. “That’s why I started Be-Spoke, a podcast inspired by the designers and makers who create something unique, and the people who commission them."

The Be-Spoke podcast explores why people commission certain objects and experiences, how they engage with a maker, and what to expect along the way. The aim is to inspire more people to engage with the vital art of commissioning, to experience the pleasure and excitement of working with an expert creative mind to fashion something unique.

Shiro Muchiri, Founder and Director of SoShiro, comments that her “dream commission is to tell a story about a community or an issue that will engage people. To have the freedom to decide who to work with and what materials to use. To tell a story through art, drawing on collaborators, and presenting it in an interesting way. This is a huge responsibility with huge learning opportunities."
